Have you tried downloading and installing the XP driver from HP?

For most printers and many USB peripherals, you MUST install the driver before connecting the device to the PC.

The 640C will connect with either a parallel or USB cable. Do not connect both cables at once.

This printer should be connected prior to installing drivers unlike older HP Deskjet printers.

Win XP has built-in drivers for the DJ 640C. All that should be required is to connect the printer and allow XP to recognize it and install driver.

The HP driver referenced by The_Chas may have additional features and should be installed. But printer will work with native XP driver.

If possible, connect with a known good cable. I prefer parallel since it is more reliable than USB.

Ensure printer port is enabled in BIOS if using parallel cable. Should be set to EPP or ECP for optimum results.

More information regarding your configuration would be helpful.

i agree with that, not judging , also, check the bios configuration for parallel port, make sure it is ecp, and i prefere the usb cable, and the installation cd for xp, in case it is required
