Printer configuration locations

By Seadogs ·
Is there a file that contains all the configurations for printers? We recently rebuilt an NT server that had some very peculiar and critical settings for a printer. This is an NT server 4 with service pack 5. Thanks for the help.

The only file that contains custom printer settings is the registry. That is the settings that were set up after the printer was installed. If you have a backup of the registry you could try restoring it BUT NOTE THAT YOU MAY RENDER YOUR SYSTEM UNBOOTABLE AND\OR TOTALLY MESSED UP. If you rebuilt the server and then try to restore the registry from the old settings you will have to re-install anything you have done since the new install. It would be better to figure out the printer settings. What printing problems are you having?

No there is no such file. It sounds like you have already re-installed NT on the same box so the only place the "very peculiar and critical settings" are would be on backup somewhere? If this is the case I would suggest installing a parallel copy of NT Server on the same box, restoring the registry from your backup to this parallel install. Then get and install NT Resource Kit Supplement 4. This will get you the Printmig utility.

You could then export your printers, boot to your "rebuilt" installation and import.
