Printer Connection Problem

By wesley.chin ·
Just got in a new printer, Canon Pixma MP160. Have installed the drivers, and connected. It connects via USB. It does not seem to be recognized, as indicated by the balloon popup on the desktop. The machine that it is connected to is a laptop, running Win 7 Home.

Are your USB Ports working on this computer?

I believe I have installed all the software.

Yes, after installing the drivers, the printer was only plugged in at the prompt.

Yes the ports are in order, tested by plugging in other USB devices.

By the way, forgot to mention that the flavor of Windows is Windows 7 Home 64 bits.

And yes, the drivers installed were 64 bits.

I had tried unsuccessfully to connect it to LPT ports, Strangely, the printer does show up in the Printer Window when connected to COM ports.

That really sounds as if the wrong driver has been applied

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to Ports

The printer should show up listed under USB Ports.

Not sure what's going on here but it's something screwy.

Dude, this is USB and PnP LPT and COM will never work

by CG IT In reply to Ports

you probably don't even have a LPT port or a serial port on your Windows 7 machine. Those are legacy ports and Windows 7 doesn' support legacy hardware, which is why Windows XP still has much appeal because it does.

Change the USB cable out for a new one, if that doesn't work investigate what USB version the printer is verses what your Windows 7 comp is. Sometimes, USB 2.0 or 3.0 devices doen't work on USB 1.1 version on the comp no matter what the mfg says about backward compatibility. [and all in ones]
