Printer Issues

By mike_george ·
I am running windows 2000 and have anHP Deskjet 690c printer. I am having trouble printing a test page. I receive an error message saying that the device is not turned on. I have checked the ports and replaced the printer cable all to no avail. I even tried another HP printer and got the same result.

Please help

Upon review the actual message says that the device is not connected

Is this a bi-directional printer? If so check its properties to see if this is enabled. Or download and install current printer drivers.

Thanks Kareem. Have tried both but still no joy. The frustrating thing is that the printer starts up, loads paper then stops like it's been shot and displays the error message

Check the printer settings on your PC, some printer settings allow for a time out after a period of inactivity at the printer. The fact that the printer loads paper and then stops midway, indicates that the "signal" is getting to the printer, but for some reason the printer and PC lose communication. If you do not find a time out parameter in your printer setup, I would recheck the port. I had a problem like this once and I solved it using a shorter printer cable, Go figure. Good Luck!

Are you running the printer with a USB cable or Centronics 36 to DB cable? Windows 2000 doesn't support all USB products. You may want to check HP's web site to see if there is a drive update.
