    Printer Offline

    I have a shared printer on the server that is off line. What steps need to be taken to get it back on line?

      Is the printer turned off?
      Does the printer have an error on it?
      If this is an IP printer, can you ping it?
      On the server, is it directed to the correct port?

      Too many variables here. If you go thru this little list then you will probably find out the reason.

        Thank you for your reply. Our servers are hosted remotely. The printer in question is turned on, I have tested it and it works, and can print a test page to it through the server. There are no error messages.It will not print from our software system. In the second administrator server, under printers, the status is listed as “offline”. The software company pointed this out to me and said the hosting company simply need to put it back on line.The tech support at our hosting company does not know how to do this(or much of anything else).
        Can you me how to do this?
        I see you are located in Maryland. Can you recommend any companies that host servers and provide technical support?

          Just right click on the printer in the window and select Use Printer Online.

          Sorry, I wasn’t thinking it would be that smiple. See what happens when we overthink a problem. 🙂

          As for hosting companies I’m sorry to say that I don’t know of any yet. I’m new to the Delmarva area and haven’t had a need to look for that. I will keep an ear to the ground for you though.

          The only choice in there is “use printer offline.” I tried this and it doesn’t work.
          Running another test today, the print job does not show up in the queue on the regular server, but does show in the queue on the administrative server.
          I switched out printers and determined it is not the printer itself.
          Any other suggestions?

          If the only selection is to use it offline then the printer is not communicating with the spooler on that server. I would start looking to verify that the port is correct. Worst case build a new port for the printer and point the printer to thsi new port.

          Sorry it took me so long to respond. I was in training for a few days.
