Printer Passwords

By crafu ·
Users are asked for a password to access a shared printer. The printer in question is shared locally on a Win 2000 machine, it has no such password accociated with it, nor does it have any restrictive permissions on either the printer or the C.
The clients trying to access the printer are getting asked for a password whenever they try to print something.

When you right-click on the printer (on the windows 2000 computer) and go to the Security tab... do you see the user who is trying to printer to this printer? Access is denied automatically, unless it is explicity allowed; the users need to be listed or the user's group needs to be on that Security tab.

The user who is trying to print to the printer must be able to logon to the machine it which it is connected. This is usually done via a domain controller. If you aren't connected to a domain, you will need to create a local account with the same username/passward as the person who is trying to print. They only time I've seen this happen is in peer-to-peer networks or if there are issues contacting the domain controler.
