Printer problem

By katn ·
I have 3 station peer to peer workgroup. A Canon 5100 was just installed hooked up to the Win98 work Station. It is shared properly. The other 2 run workstation with service pack 4. All can print fine. But on the 2 work stations you cannot change any thing in the printer properties box. It kicks you out with this error message "winword.exe Exception: access violation (0x0000005), Address: 0x771aa92e
winword is replaced with what ever application you are in trying to change propertie. Any one know what this means?

Printer problem

Unfortunately, the address doesn't tell you what module or driver is loaded at that address. I've had some interesting experiences with SP4 on NT Workstation - you might want to try upgrading one of the workstations to SP5 or SP6a and see if that helps the situation any.

If not, to track down the problem, you'll need to get a copy of dumpexam.exe from the NT Resource Kit. With this utility and the workstation set up to write a memory dump file, you can figure out exactly which driver or program is causing the problem and that will give you a head start on how to fix it.

Best wishes!

If you are using Winword 97, you may properly try to re-apply this Office 97 Service Release 2a. If still having the similar problem again, try to uninstall the office 97 and reinstall again and apply the latest NT Service Pack 6a (if your hardware can support). I hope this can help you. Let me know.

If you have specific NT drivers for Canon 5100, try to install it as local printer and connect it to network port after.

Is this the same network that you posted the question about domain logons ? If so, then you really are on crack. You can't log a 98 machine into a workgroup. This a real tragedy in this case because I think the problem your describing is a security issue not a buggy app or driver.

Good luck.....Jeremy

This is going to sound very weird but it worked for me. Delete the NT profile off the NT workstations and let the users log back in. Go to c:\winnt\profiles then delete the user's folder that is having the problem.

My network is not in a workgroup but I did have this problem in my domain and as a last resort I recreated their profile (when they log back in after deleting it - NT will recreate their profile on it's own) and they no longer received the Dr. Watson Winword.exe error.

I do agree that reinstalling Office 97 would be my first step. Although it didn't work for me. Good Luck!
