PRINTER PROBLEM

By jaeath ·
I have two problems with my printers. I use NT4.0 on all servers and jet admin and jet direct cards in all printers. The printers are 4000tn, 4050 tn and 2500 cm inkjets. Every week or so I have a problem with the cue backing up and not printing anymore. The other part of the problem is if a job was printed already and than the server is restarted the job is printed again and i have to maually clear the print que every couple of days. Is this normal for NT? I never had this problem in the past with other networks. The network consists of less than 500 people if that matters at all. If you need more info please let me know and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

What service pack are you running on the servers? Does stopping and starting the spooler service help?

This is not normal - what network protocol(s) are you using? If you are using TCP/IP on these printers - this IMHO is the best choice for these newer printers - one thing you need to do if not done already is assign static IP addresses to the printers. You can do this by creating reservations in DHCP (if you are using a DHCP server), or directly on the printer if no DHCP server is present. This should reduce the number of problems. Also, if you are using any Win95 or 98 workstations, reducing the length of your share names (staying under the 8-char limit) - i.e., HPLJ4000 instead of "HP Laserjet 4000" - may help. One thing I've also found - when the queues lock up like this (which happens occasionally but shouldn't happen daily or even weekly) sometimes simply turning the printer off and on restores communication. Hope this helps!
