Printer sharing between XP Laptop and Vista 64 Desktop

By Garynm ·
I just bought a Dell Desktop running Vista 64. I have a combined WiFi and ethernet network but I wasn't able to share an Epson Stylus Color RX620 printer with my XP laptop, 2nd desktop running XP. Or even my Vista 32 laptop. I finally found a way to print share between the Vista laptop and the Vista Desktop but not any of my XP machines. I've set printer sharing on. I've loaded the latest drivers from Epson but I keep getting the error message that the printer drivers are not correct and it tells me to find the correct .inf file. I've tried several but none are recognized. I've connected disconected, deleted and reloaded drivers and still won't work. I direct connect the printer to the XP machines and they print. Any help with this?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have all in the same workgroup and I can fileshare. I think it has to do with the different printer drivers but I'm not sure

Are the systems that you can not share with

On a different LAN like is the one with the printer on it on a Wired LAN and the others on a WiFi LAN?

If that is the case you'll need to enter the WiFi Access Points Setup and bridge the Wireless and Wired Networks so that they can communicate with each other.

Thanks. I've tried my laptops connected with Ethernet cables to the network and by WiFi. Print sharing is on. Neither print shares.

Well have you setup a Workgroup?

In XP you run the Network Setup Wizard which can be found by clicking on Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications.

Here you can chose to run the New Connection Wizard, the Wireless Setup Wizard and the Network Setup Wizard. You need to share File & Printers and have every computer on in the same Workgroup.

Look in the help files for Network Setup.

I have done that. Thanks. I'm going to try a different approach. I just bought a Linksys WiFi print server and see if that works. I'm giving up with the "simple" print sharing.

This will not work

Until you have a user name and password of identical credentials at the very least on the computer that has the printer attached to it AND the computer you are trying to send the print job from, otherwise access will be denied even to a printer which is shared.
And by the way you would be better of with a network printer in this scenario
