printer sharing on win 2000 professional

By emmyk3 ·
I would like to share an hplaser jet printer on windows 2000 proffesional .Problem is that after sharing it locally windows 98 can not see it on the network using the network setup wizard why? Yet this is possible between win 98 pcs on a network. this is crucial as i would like to use win 2000 pro as the printserver.

Share the printer with a single-word (possibly of less than 8 characters-like 'Printer').
On the Win98 pc, start the 'Add Printer' wizard; but instead of browsing for the shared printer, straightaway give the correct url of the printer to add. For example: \\Print_Server\Printer.
This should find the printer and add it, assuming you have installed drivers for Win98 on the Print_Server (from 'additional drivers').

Hope this helps.

Hi

Another option you can try is to make sure the name of the shared printer does not contain any accents. For example, if you share a printer as 'Mick's printer' it will not be seen, or it will be reported as being offline.

However, if the networked printer cannot be seen at all, I would stop sharing it, then share it again. Hopefully, the printer will now be visible when you browse for it. If you cannot see it using a UNC path as described above, then I would check the Win2000 system, and make sure that sharing is properly enabled, and that the Win98 machines have permission to access the printer.

Good luck

Hi, possibly you haven't the win 98 drivers in the server, or in the workstations. It's possible too that you have shared the printer as password protected, you must to unprotect it or specify the users who will be able to print.

The printer should show up when you browse the Network N-Hood? If so just right click on it and install from there.
