Printer: User Intervention Required

By youngturk ·
Using Windows 98se: Printing to a Hplj5p, a message appears after sending the print job, and viewing the status of the print job.
Message: User Intervention Required, use printer offline. Other 98/NT users are connecting and printing OK. I restarted the machine (laptop), reinstall the printer drivers and the same message appears. I noticed that after the print job is sent the printer goes offline and I have to switched it back online again.

Your thoughts are welcome.

Printer: User Intervention Required

It seems that you are printing with a network connection. I assume that the printer is connected to the network and you are using a 'share'. If this is the case, check your share name, that it is available to this computer. Also check your protocol. do you use IPX or only TCP/IP? Does the user on your laptop have the permissions to access the printer?
If your printer is connected with a 'print server' are you using an IP address? In this case, you will need 'HP jet admin' or use the IP printing from NT. (I do not know the operating system on the laptop - I am assmuming it is a windows product)

More information is needed to properly diagnose your problem. Write additional info and I will try to assist.

Check this particular machine for viruses, and then scan it's hard disk thouroughly.

Afterwards, remove this printer and all associated files...

Then re-installlllllll

Whatever this workstaion is sending to the printer, it doesn't like it!!!!!

It's being knocked off line, (the source of your error message..)

The printer works fine for all other clients, concentrate in this workstation...

Go get 'em Tiger....

Printer: User Intervention Required

I've tried all the suggestions, but amazingly I only solved this problem last Thursday. I retraced all my steps to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I found that windows 95/98 drivers were not install on the print server, so I installed it and check the permissions for the user, fine. Removed the printer, add it back only this time I restore all defaults on the user's machine for the printer properties page. Amazingly there was not that message showing up anymore. Wowwww. There must be something I did during the previous steps that worked. I'm thinking its the 95/98 drivers, but then, why was the printer installing then? I'm just happy that the user is happy and problem solved. Someone told me that this could happen if you try to print to a different tray. Thanks very much guys for your help and patience.
