Printers and IP

By d.jones092 ·
Howdy.

Got an HP JetDirect on an HP LaserJet 5P laserjet. The printer lost it's IP settings yesterday. I need to go in and reconfigure it. I tried to use a static arp entry matched to the MAC address to get into the card, however I am still unable. Upon examining my arp table, the entry is there and correct. I've tried rebooting the card and the printer. Any thoughts?

Thanks for any info.

I suggest using HP's JetAdmin software; it should find the JetDirect card and allow you to modify/assign IP address. JetAdmin should be on the installation cd for the printer, but it is also downloadable from HP's website.

Thanks for the info.

We are currently using a utility from HP called the "Add Network Printer Wizard", which is a stripped-down version of JetAdmin that runs on the local pc. The program tries to find network printers and allow you to connect to them. We don't have a big network, so this is what we use. IMHO, this should be enough, without having to use JetAdmin, no?

i always use the add printer wizard. jet direct, ugh. so i would look for another problem. make sure not communication/ip/configuration problem, then declare printer nic bad maybe. can you reset nic in printer. try to get it back to factory defaults. maybe thru front panel. will printer spit out ip address/subnet mask it thinks its at on a network config page?. you got link lite? maybe card/cable/network jack went south. maybe input media type went wrong...maybe somebody plugged it into 100mb port on switch...

My advice is simple: reset all settings on JetDirect card and reconfigure it with "JetAdmin" from the scratch. First you can try - turn your printer off, press "Online" button and turn it on. In most cases it will erase all settings. If not, look at HP site directions, how to reset your card type fo factory default.

Good luck,

Why don't you just download the printer management utility from the web site? That would work for sure.
