Have seen the disappearing printers on several w98SE computers. However a reboot usually brings them back. Does yous come back with a reboot, if so you may just be lacking resources. Add more RAM, but not 512 or more. 384MB is good for Win98

As far as your problem is concerned the problem persists may be from the viruses like w32.exe worm, desktop.ini, folder.htt. These are few powerful viruses which easily destroys the various resources in the computer having win 98 OS. the best way of solving this problem is to scan the entire system with latest norton virus 2003 which has got updates of more than 80000 viruses. Or else
go to start-->find and search for desktop.ini and folder.htt files. if you could find these files delete them and also remove from recycle bin also.
Try these tips for your win98 machines in case if you could not solve the problem get back to me with entire details of the problem. You can reach me

You said that window 98 is not showing installed printers, so if there had no printer in printer folder you cannot print any document. It may be sometimes cause of window system error. Are you already run service pack for window 98? I think you can try by reinstalling printer driver. After reinstalled the printer, there must be printer in printer folder. If not, please check system file and restore for corrupt file by running system file checker. After that, if that cannot solve the problem check registry.
By the way, you said window 98 not showing installed printer is you look via network or own computer. If from network please check for network connection and sharing printer and user right to access the printer.

You also need to make sure that the port settings are not set to print directly to the printer. If they are and more that one person tries to print at once you will get this same problem. If you make sure all are set up to Que print jobs you should see this problem go away. I also recomment not using PS2 drivers on large print jobs, PCL drivers perform better in Win98.

I have delt with the same thing on network printers windows 98 and NT 40. The printer folder would come up empty. I would reboot and they would show again. never figured out what caused this. Try in your virus program to exclude the C:\windows\spool folder. Someone recomended this to me and it hasnt happened since...
