I have 7 HP printers, servicing Win98, 95 & NT workstation clients; all of the printers have internal hard disks.
Currently printing is via print queues on an NT server.
I want to use the hard disks on the printers & print directly to them & bypass the server. I know you can print directly to the printer by selecting the radio button on the scheduling tab of the printer properties but when i tried this on the workstations - jobs hung for ages. Do i need to select the radio button on the server or is there another way to print without going near the server.
HP were of little help - they wanted me to add a HP printer port, however, we use TCP/IP printing.
Any ideas?
Thanks in anticipation

I would stick with the print queues; the problem seems to be with the HP print server receiving multiple jobs simultaneously - just has trouble with that.
Using the print queue allows everyone to print, but the print server to only get one job at a time.
First, print a configuration page from your printer, and find out what it's current TCP/IP address is. Most HP printers you can do this from the menu, or by a combination of the control panel switches. Your manual should show you how.
Start you web browser, and connect to the printer using the tcp/ip address, and on the left hand side of the page, you can set up Internet Printing, which bypasses the print server completely.
For your 95/98 ( and your NT ) workstations, you can downloadHP Jetadmin. Install it, and using the simple setup, you can add tcp/ip printers.
In both cases, you are printing directly from the Workstation to the printer without going through the printserver on the server.
I wouldnt recomend using print directly to the printer, the hdd in the printer usually in used for collating, multiple copies and to download fonts permantely.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem.
