Printing in Windows 2000

By CathyF ·
I have upgraded a PC from Win95 to 2000 Pro and am not now able to print to a Laserjet 5L printer. I have deleted and re-installed many times and have downloaded the latest drivers from the HP website and am getting nowhere. I can print a status page so assume the actual printer is OK. I have another PC which I have upgraded to Windows 2000 which has the same printer that is working fine. Can anyone help?

Go to Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs and remove the hp software

Reboot

Run regedit and remove any remaining entries for LaserJet 5L

Close the registry

Reboot

Reinstall the print drivers from your download

You should be fine thereafter. HP is netorious for leaving things in the registry... and because a reinstall always sees those entries, they never get updated.
Remove them and you'll be fine.

There was nothing in add/remove programs.

delete the printer and all HP files(hp*.*) from your computer. Reboot and install the HP5L drivers that come with your Win2000 CD. I had to use the one from the CD and not the one from HP. The HP drivers failed for me. Try that and let me know

This works but you need to stop print spooler services, disable on startup and reboot in order to delete some of the HP related files, then set back to automatic and reboot in order to reinstall the printer. Thanks.
