Printing Notification to wrong user

By rdwollenberger ·
I've got two NT 4.0 users who are getting print notifications when the other person prints. I'm looking for help to find out where to look to solve the problem. One is on an IBM ThinkPad 390 with NT4.0 and service pack 4, the other is working on a Compaq Professional Workstation AP200 with NT4.0 and SP4.
Thanks.

Are they cheating and using the same user name? You may want to turn off print notifications, or the messenger service on the print server if don't want to see the broadcasts.

They don't have each other's passwords, and their PC's have unique names (userlastname_NT). I don't know how to turn off print notifications, but I'd rather fix the problem...Thanks for trying.

Are they printing to a shared printer or network printer. If it is a shared printer goto printersand select(highlight) that printer then goto to fileon the main tool bar and select server properties go to advanced button and make sure notify remote doc printed is not checked. If this is a network printer go to the server and do the same as above. Hope this helps.

Try at each machine from a command prompt NET NAME

This will give you the NAME ALIASs' that are currently in use at each machine. One will be the machine name and there should be one more for the current logged on user. There can be others also.

If the wrong user is listed:
NET NAME WrongUser /delete
then
NET NAME CorrectUser /add

Another thing to try is the ALERTS section in Control Panel, SERVER. You could have alerts set up to go to the machines also.
