printing problem

By Mihai.P ·
I have the following problem: in the spool, after the documents are printed, they remains with status printed and are not deleted. After some time (maybe several hours, a day ... I don't know exactly) it starts reprinting the old documents.
The server is a Win 2000 SP3 which is used as print server for about 10 printers and 100 users.

Look if some process hasn't changed attribute of spooler file to read-only. You can find more details in Microsoft Support article (216221):

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;216221

The main idea is to clear Read-only attribute from spool file if it has one. If not, then I would suggest to make backup and check if file system has no errors on disk that contains spool file.

The spool files do not have read-only attribute set.

The one server controls 10 printers?

If yes, and if this is only happening with one of the printers, then I suggest you delete that printers drivers from the server, and then reinstall them. Stop the spooler service and restart. Then see if the problem occurs again. The printer drivers have probably gotten corrupted.

If this is happening with multiple printers on the server, then power off the printers, shutdown the server, power on the printers and then power on the server. You can also try re-applying SP3.

If the problem remains, it would probably help to be able to know which printer (manufacturer/model) you are using and which OS your clients are using. Also it would help to know if the printer only does this with certain users (all on Win9x or WinXP) or if it does it with everyone.

The problem happends on all printers. All printers are HP LaserJet (different models).
I restarted the server last night and all print jobs probably lost the printed status and all printers reprinted the yesterday jobs :)

I find on technet that the rights on spool folder should be administrators, creator owner and system full control (and this is ok)

Check under the advanced tab for each printer and make sure that Keep printed documents is not checked. Also make sure that the printer security settings are correct (Admins have everything,Authenticated users have print, creator owner has manage docs).

everything (maybe not everything :) ) it's set correctly (keep printed documents not set, permissions ok, NTFS permissions on spool folder ok)
