Printing reports from the Web

By nfisher ·
My team is in the process of re-writing some FoxPro 2.6 apps to Visual Basic with a Web front end. Many of our apps produce reports that are distributed to our CEO and other upper management - so they have to look nice, headings on each page, etc. Also need to be able to print particular pages and not the whole report. We are new in the Web world and need some help!

I have similar problem, but all that i have found is or to output HTML (almost unprintable) either to use some formats like PDF,Word or RTF but it is not so easy to program such things and PDF requires some ActiveX (PDFLib, ActivePDF etc.). If you will find something better send me a letter ( kirill@ens.ru).

I can think of several approaches.

One use something like Crystal Reports to generate your reports. Crystal has a nice front end to format reports for web apps.

Another is to generate Excel format reports on the web. If you have Microsoft clients, Excel will be launched automatically from the browser. You should be able to write things to Excel from VB.

A third option is to read the web pages from Excel instead of using IE or some other browser. The user then can format the output using Excel. I have a Microsoft document that describes this called, "Microsoft Excel Web Connectivity Kit." I beleive I downloaded it from Microsoft at:
http://search.microsoft.com but I can't remember exactly where.

why don't you try upgrading to Visual FoxPro 6.0? With this VFP, you can use previous FoxPro code, compile it as a COM server and use the COM directly within your VB or ASP just like any other COM.

To use VB to mimic VFP reporting functions may be much harder.

Hi !

This is OK, so FoxPro very good software.
An Microsoft had bought it several times ago because thay have not like this. FoxPro the best !
And my suggest for you - it is very good way do it on FoxPro 6.0. In the future it will be do easy because many new Internet fitures will be in the version 7.0.

Best regards
