Problem accessing share on a NT Server

By Philip_L ·
I have a NT Server 4/SP6 that (some) Win95 clients have trouble accessing through DOS. Upon rebooting the 95 client, after logging in, the WinNT login script runs. It is a batch file that says "NET USE V: \\Server_1\AVUpdate". Usually, it says that the sharename cannot be found. I can ping the server, but can't get to the share. Once inside Windows, I can browse Nethood and find Server_1. After that, I CAN successfully map a drive using the NET USE command. What is the deal? Could it be the '_' in Server_1?

Make sure your path names are correct. If they are then make sure it supports dos file name restrictions. (8chr long) I have seen this issue before and it turned out to be just the name length.

Hope this helps

All the paths are correct. The share name is AVUPdate, which IS 8 characters long. The server name is Server_1, which is 8 characters. Any other ideas?

You might also check to see if there are any illegal characters in the sharename or the user for that mater. We ran into the same problem in Exchange.

There aren't illegal characters in the sharename (AVUpdate). And all our users have just letters in their names. Any other ideas?

Could be a switch issue.... Try this.. set the network card to 10bit instead of auto... reboot the system if it maps the drive then your switching has issues with the network cards set to auto nagotiate

Hope this helps

In your path name use the IP address of the machine instead of the Computer name . eg \\203.100.2.2\Avupdate .Since you can ping server_1 with its IP address you should be able to connect using the IP address .

Good luck
