problem adding msi package to GPO

By thetechguy ·
We are using Group policies for software distribution for Win2k professional desktops from last year successfully.

Recently i am facing a problem to add windows media player msi package to group policy. This msi package is created using Microsoft eneterprise Deployment kit for media player 7.1, which is a free tool available from microsoft site.I am getting the following error when try to add the msi to GP--"Add operation failed.Unable to extract deployment information from the package.Run validation on the package to ensure that the package is correct".I have followed the default procedure and did nothing special.

Any help ?

Hi,
Bit of a long shot, but if the pc that you are administering the group policy from (IE via the admin tools) also has wmp installed this might cause a problem. Try adding the msi directly on the server rather than from a remote machine.

Sounds like the installer script is missing the appname.exe and appname.wsm files. Question, did you create the MSI package or download the package from Microsoft? Some of Microsoft's MSI packages as missing the executable files in the installation script. you can create a new installer package using the existing MSI files by using Veritas Installer package editor and a clean workstation.

Microsoft msi comes as a single file only.

Thanks for the reply.
I did try to add the package from multiple servers, without any success.

I have experience with WISE installer tool but that takes some time to create the package.Microsoft's enterprise deployment kit prepares the msi in two minutes.
