Problem adding PCI serial port card

By marc ·
We just added a 2 port PCI serial card to our Dell Server for a 2nd modem. The ports show up as com 4 and com 5 in device manager. We have been unable to get a modem to work on one of these ports. We tried a replacement card to make sure it was ok. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I take it that you've tried switching the modems to different Com Ports just to make sure that they are both working properly.

If they are showing up as working units in the System Management it could be a modem problem how many do you have attached? What OS are you using and how many Com Ports do you actually have connected? If this is the second Comm Port Card in the computer this could be your problem as generally speaking installing one of these cards will cause the Comm Ports to show up as 3 & 4 or 2 & 3 depending on how many com ports you have in the unit.

There could also be a software conflict occurring if you have an internal modem installed so the Comm Port 1 is on the M'Board the next Comm 2 is the Internal Modem and then the next two should be the Comm Port Card but if there is a gap in there of 1 or 2 Comm Ports then the Hardware isn't properly installed even if Windows Insists that the thing is working properly that's of course supposing that you are using some form of Windows.

Generally if you have 2 of these cards in a computer the second one will not work at all as it is sharing the same system resources with the first one and while in a static mode they appear to work but when actually used they have a clash and prevent the second card from working.

A bit more info here wouldn't go astray as the numbering of the Comm Ports seems wrong to me.

Lets know and I'll try to help you out.
