Problem giving domain group permission

By KelleyL ·
Please help! I am having problems giving domain groups permission to anything in XP Pro. I am trying to add a domain group to the local administrators group. I am also trying to give a domain group permission to a folder on a network drive. Each time, mmc crashes after I enter the name of the domain group and click the OK button. From the event viewer:

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module netapi32.dll, version 5.1.2600.1106, fault address 0x00024e14.

The application, C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 08/04/2003 @ 10:52:56.764 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 71C44E14 (NETAPI32!NetUserGetLocalGroups)

The domain is NT 4 and my computer is running XP Pro SP1.

Well, I found a very nice discussion about this same problem between a user and a Microsoft tech. Unfortunately, they did not find the solution for the person with the problem, but some interesting facts came out. Here is a link to the problem:

Now, it all came down to the fact that the XP box was running the Novell client. Do you run a Novell client? According to the Microsoft tech, removing the Novell client fixed this for some people. For the person with the problem, though, this did not fix it.
But, give it a shot. IF you have the Novell client installed, remove it and see if that works.

If not, then the problems increase. The DLL you get in the error message is used by many Windows processes (run TASKLIST /M netapi32.DLL from a Command Prompt to see the whole list). So, you won't be able to boot into Safe Mode and replace the file with a pre XP1 copy.
If you have a copy of NTFSDOS, then you could try to boot to it and then change the file.

hope this helps
