Problem Installing MS Defender

By NNLogistics ·
I was using the MS Antispyware beta which was fine, however it is now defunct. In attempting to install "MSDefender" on Windows 2000 I received a message regarding GDIPlus preRequisite pack. I found an MS alert and downloaded the pack with instructions to install the Gdiplus.dll in the system 32 directory. Now I am getting a message regarding installing a windows update (not specific). I also found in a text file in the pack which states "For Windows 2000, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98, install gdiplus.dll into the private directory of the application not into the system directory" and I am not sure what is meant by that? I would loke to install this prerequisite pack before I go any further. Any thoughts on what is meant by "install gdiplus.dll into the private directory of the application not into the system directory".

Just maybe

Maybe they mean that in a server environment where the system admin. would have a private folder/directory for certain apps. vs system install where all users would have access to the same stuff....best guess.
Good luck

GDI+ + Windows Defender

by hdalton007 In reply to Just maybe

I think I have your answer but I am going by memory. I installed Windows Defender on several PCs about a month ago and come up with same problem on some machines. After you download the correct gdiplus.dll file for your OS from Microsoft simply copy/paste it into the system32 folder. System32 folder's location varies by OS version but is usally in WINNT or Windows directory, depending on OS. Also after loading don't forget to go inti General/Tools withing Windows defender to setup your scheduled scans for a time when PC will be running and to define what should be done if it finds threats. (remove, quarantine, ignore, etc.)

THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE WORKED FOR ME:

1. Download the Platform SDK Redistributable: GDI+. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6a63ab9c-df12-4d41-933c-be590feaa05a (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6a63ab9c-df12-4d41-933c-be590feaa05a)
Important When you download the Ggdiplus_dnld.exe file, click Save, and then save the file to the desktop.
2. Double-click the Ggdiplus_dnld.exe file, and then click Yes to agree to the Microsoft Software License Terms.
3. When you are prompted, unzip all the files to the desktop. To do this, click Browse, double-click Desktop, and then click Unzip.
4. Manually copy the Gdiplus.dll file from the desktop to the %systemroot%\System32 folder. To do this, follow these steps: a. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
b. Click Desktop.
c. Right-click the Gdiplus.dll file, and then click Copy.
d. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\System32, and then click OK.
e. Click Edit, and then click Paste.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried that. I'm getting a slightly different message now. I found this on the we.

"For Windows 2000, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98, install gdiplus.dll into the private directory of the application not into the system directory" and I am not sure what is meant by that?

Seems to contradict where the .dll file should reside.
