problem loading windows 98

when loading a fresh setup of win 98 in dos i'm getting an error while loading the setup files,,,it says that there is problems loading the .bat files due to a possible virus or hardware or software problem,,,I've fdisk'd and formatted the hardrive 3 times and still get this error when i try to load the o/s plse advise TIA

It is possible that the PC was infected by either a boot sector or BIOS virus.

Have you used the mbr switch on fdisk?
fdisk /mbr
This will clear out some boot sector viri.

Next, what is your hardware configuration?
There are issues with more than 511MB of RAM with W98.
Drives larger than 132GB are not supported.
There are some issues with CPUs faster than 2.1GHz.

If this is a re-install on an existing system, remove and re-seat all RAM modules and plug-in cards.

Or deactivate/disable virus detection options in BIOS until you finish the installation.
