problem play back sound in win98

By rollatgr49 ·
I try these things but the matter is same.
PC plays the windows default sounds but when i play a music or vidio file it gives a message
"no audio hardware found or it did not work properly"
Sound driver is working properly.
I have also winxp along with win98 and all hardware are working properly in winxp.

Look in the 'Media' area of control panel.

Most often this problem is found to be the correct 'device' isn't listing in this section. The drop box may have more than one device and has the wrong one listed.

Another possible is to remove everything under the sound devices in device manager while in safemode (shows all devices), you may have duplicate devices preventing the sound from working correctly.

If not this, a third method with all devices in place and no 'alerts' showing in device manager, go to 'add / remove programs' in control panel, under the 'windows' tab, find the 'multimedia' check box, uncheck it, apply, ok, reboot the machine, go back into that location and recheck the multimedia check box - turn windows multimedia off than turns it back on refreshing the drivers and program information.
