I have a 5 yr old Compaq Presario pc running on XP Home Edition and last night I made the mistake of defragmenting. This morning, the computer starts and gets me to the log-on list of users but after choosing any of them, the screen goes to the desktop screen but with only the photo image and no text (showing all programs on my pc). No words at all and unable to pull up the START either on bottom left as usual. Tried to restore from Safe mode but unable to finish that process before screen goes black; tried choosing Last Good Configuration but again, screen went black. Any suggestions as to how to remedy whats wrong? I do have the Recovery disk but really don’t want to go this route because I will lost a lot of programs and data.
