Problem using Win 98 Device manager

By lschaier ·
I have accidentally removed/lost the "Monitors" and "Display adapters" entries and branches in "Device Manager". I have tried to reload Windows 98 with the hope that that will bring the entries back but that does not work. I don't believe I am completing the reload because the screen goes blank. A start up in "safe mode" keeps the display running but doesn't seem to buy anything.

Thanks in advance,

Len

Try loading the monitor & display drivers while in safe mode and then reboot.

Start my booting into safe mode. (press F8 while booting or hold the ctrl key down while booting) If the you see any display adapter or monitor remove all devices under display adapter or monitor. next reboot and windows should find the new devices. Another thing to try is =>start => run => type ASD and enter. If it shows any driver in the window mark them and reboot.

First of all, you can't load any drivers while in safe mode (duh).

Also, reinstalling windows won't guarantee much if something got corrupt or really messed up. Windows tends to keep a database of all hardware found and drivers for it. Best course of action: delete entire windows directory first (use deltree command), then reinstall. Be sure you have system disk with cd rom support unless you already copied cab files to hard drive. Good luck.

I assume that the Display related icons and branches do not appear in either the "view by type" or "view by connection" modes. I assume that you have not restricted display settings changes by using TweakUI, the system policy editor or similar functionality.

I suggest that you push the "refresh" button at the bottom of the Device Manager dialog to see if it will bring the display icons back. If that does not work, attempt to modify the display setting properties on the windows desktop (rightmouse-click an empty area of the desktop and select "properties", and then select the "settings" tab) then reboot to see if the display will be updated. If that does not work, get a copy of Brian Livingston's Win95/98 secrets. He describes the process of manipulating the registry to add the display back.

There seems to be a number of Books by Livingston that deal with Windows 98 so I have not as yet identified the one that deals with the registry in sufficient detail to solve my problem. Any further help locating the book would be appreciated.
