Problem w/ Win2k Networking

By paidhima ·
Just recently, after a re-format and reinstall of Windows 2000, I can't seem to network with my two other windows 98 machines. My adapters are installed, I'm logged in to the network, I have the same workgroup, my IP address and subnet mask is set correctly. I can ping and tracert the other computers on the network, but an attempt to map the drives fails. When I get into my Local Area Connection, it takes forever for the Home (my workgroup) name to pop up. When I go into that, it again stalls out for about a minute or so, then says that I can't find a list of servers in the workgroup. I have the LMHOSTS disabled, but NetBIOS enabled. I have no DNS or WINS servers designated. This computer is part of a peer-to-peer network. I can't seem to find anything different from what I had before, but I can't seem to contact the other computers.

Problem w/ Win2k Networking

by nixxo_us In reply to Problem w/ Win2k Networki ...

Hy,
Im surprise that you manage to have a network connection From Win 2000 to a Win 98 machine before you format your HDD!!! you se I Have try before so many time and never succed to connect to a Win 98 PC. I find out that they don't communicate properly yep well thats Microsoft for you.How did you did it? What config you use VPN, Dial in, or anithing in particular? Because as far as I now and experience is imposible to get a Win 98 to communicate to a Win 2000. I had to upgrade 2 of my PCto communicate with my Win 2000 PC!!! Thats how bad I try!!! I try anithing nown posible to the networking area before I whent to the upgrade. So I recommend to upgrade your 2 PC for a succesfull network.
Thanks and I hope have help you in some way.

P.S.
Did you try the network wizard remember that in order to communicate in Win 2000 you have to be part of a buissnes network without a domain or if you preferd with a domain.

I didn't have a problem communicating before. As for the network wizard, I've tried that about 4 times. I've even removed all connections and the network adapter, then reinstalled them all. Still to no avail.

After about 6 hours of trying, I found the problem. It just so happens ZoneAlarm was ignoring my other computers, as I hadn't enabled my network adapter in the program, nor had I added the other computers as trusted addresses. The answer truly is the first thing I should have checked. Bonehead.
