Problem when changing IP address on PDC

By Leizure. . . ·
We have just installed a new network and it has forced me to change the IP address on the PDC. The problem is that after rebooting the PDC it thinks it's a BDC and can't find the PDC(!) to load the user names etc. If I then change the adress back tothe old address it boots up fine.
Anybody have any ideas?

Problem when changing IP address on PDC

Check your WINS server (if you're using WINS). You probably have the old IP in the WINS database, and it will need to be removed.

Thanks for trying.
We did have WINS installed, I changed the address - no difference, I deleted WINS - no difference. Same with DCHP (we use static IP)

Problem when changing IP address on PDC

by TomSal In reply to Problem when changing IP ...

First off, to let you know in my five years of NT administration I NEVER had this problem...so I'm shooting on instinct here...

My guess is you some how have corrupted SIDs maybe...the SIDs uniquely ID each PDC, BDC etc. if this is the case the only safe way to restructure them is to re-install the NOS.

It obviously doesn't know your PDC is really a PDC - otherwise it'd play great with the BDC..this is why I theorize about the SID's.

However, have you tried tricking it to get the correct BDC and PDC recognized? Take the "PDC" offline totally, turn it off. Using Server Manager promote the BDC to PDC, now when you boot the ORIGINAL PDC (which up until know was offline), you'll be prompted with an error message (because you can't have two PDC's in a single domain), this is when you'll have the option to DEMOTE one to a BDC. Do this, thus setting up the correct PDC and BDC configs you want. When its done - synchronize them both to update the user accounts. There's no reason it should be giving you the IP address conflict - that is assuming that you have *UNIQUE* static addresses (of course you know that each machine needs a UNIQUE and static address, right?). No BDC or PDC should ever use a dynamic IP assignment. If you need more help, email me I'd love to help solve your problem.

Take care.

Tom

Problem when changing IP address on PDC

To say your answer is rejected is a bit unfair because I think you have given me some very useful informatiion. However, I am a little confused, I'm glad you mention your years of experience as I do not have many, I'm not sure that I fully explainedthe problem - when the machine reboots and thinks it is a BDC I guess it can't find the PDC because as you rightly say you can only have one on the domain. We do not have any BDCs on the network. Having said that we do have NT clients, Unix Servers (whithin the IP range)and NT PDCs/BDCs in other domains (outside the IP range. My confusion comes in where you mention about promoting the BDC, I tried this but as it can't find the PDC it fails. Hope you are interested enough to follow this one.

Thanks - Dave

Problem when changing IP address on PDC

When you changed the IP address you made the box inaccessable to all boxes on the old segment (unless you are also running IPX).

You should be able to just promote the box to a PDC using Server Manager (as if it were the only box on the network, which it is). The other boxes should appear after their addreses are changed to the new range.

If you are using WINS, clear everything (all the addresses are wrong anyway). Go to your hosts and lmhosts files and change them to match the new addresses. If you are running a DNS server, fix the addresses there. If you have your ISP do your DNS you will have to give them the changes.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I have tried promoting it when it boots as a BDC but because it can't find the PDC it fails.
