Problem with automatic "highlighting" selection

By dggeelong ·
I use Windows Vista and Office 2007 Microsoft Word
As I type a WORD document, quite often the text starts HIGHLIGHTING [selecting] in blue/grey by itself and I am "locked" and cannot get out! The highlighting happens automatically often when I enter a new line.
This problem occurs mainly if something [pic or text] has been added to the document.
Clicking on Editing --> then SELECT--> then Select objects seems to have some effect but does not fix the problem. ESC may also work temporally if the document allows me to return to a single curser at the beginning of the document.
To save the document does not fix the problem, when the document is reopened the same highlighting is still present!
This is extremely frustrating! Can anyone help me?
This problem has only started in recent months, I have been using Office 2007 [student] on Vista.
I totally removed Office 2007 and reloaded it - the same problem existed [automatic highlighting].

Everytime I say highlighted I mean the blue-grey highlight colour selection.

Most of the time the text is highlighted is after trying to enter a new line. The new line does not happen and the whole document is highlited and locked. At no point have I tried to select any text myself.

I ran Office Diagnostics [3pm - 3 April 2012]
no action is necessary

Diagnostics run: 6
Diagnostics that identified problems: 1
Diagnosticsthat took corrective actions: 1

Detailed results
Setup Diagnostic Status: completed
The diagnostic repaired all Microsoft Office installation problems it could find.
Verified 12 packages.

The words 'Extended Selection' has never appeared in the status bar.
