Problem with booting in Windows XP

By falcon123 ·
My computer has Windows XP and WIndows 98 installed under dual boot configuration.Windows XP is installed on the active partition and WIndows 98 on the second partition.Recently I increased the capacity of RAM from 64MB SDRAM to 128MB SDRAM. There weren't any problems, but lately by PC keeps on rebooting and 'am unable to get in to WinXP. But i am able to log into Win98.
What could be the problem?

Problem with booting in Windows XP

I can understand you having a dual boot as XP does not allows direct access to the hardware as windows 98 would. Besides, back compatibility on XP is not really the greatest.

You stated that after you upgraded your system everything worked, and after some time it stopped working.

You must likely got your windows xp installation corrupted as windows 98 still works. Since you have that 98/xp dual boot you are running on FAT.

Windows XP (2002) will leave windows 98 alone, however we cannot say the same as far as windows 98 scandisk. If you had improper shutdowns windows 98 scandisk attempted to repair disk problems and most likely disregarding XP information which deemed useless and you installation is now sad to say corrupted.
You have to reinstall my friend.

Good luck,

Recommendation (If you do not need to access the hardware through windows 98 you should seriously consider completely moving to windows xp specially if you have the Professional version on the product that way you can use NTFS it is great!)
