Problem with external harddrive

By nodiggity47 ·
Just wanted to preface my question by letting you know that I am a novice. I recently bought a WD external harddrive b/c I was running out of storage space in my notebook. B/c my USB ports are regular ports, I bought a USB 2.0 Notebook PC Card (480 MBS).

1) when I connect my external HD to the USB card, my computer recognizes the HD and then freezes
2) I know that the USB 2.0 card works because I have had no problems connecting my external DVD burner to it.
3) when I connect my external HD to my regular USB ports that are already installed in my notebook, everything is fine. The computer picks up the external HD and my computer does not freeze. However, I obviously want the option of utilizing the USB 2.0 capability for transferring larger files quickly.

Anyone have any diagnosis of the problem? Is it possible that I need a different USB card (are there different types of USB cards than a 480Mbs)?

If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great. Also, if possible, please use easy to understand terms as I will probably have difficulty deciphering technical jargon. thanks all.
