    Problem with NTbackup

    Locked

    by edlockett ·

Using small business server 2003 on a dell 2600 server with a sony DDS-4 tape drive.
Want to back up some files from a network drive to the tape. However every time I run windows backup, it crashes. This happens whether the backup is started from the scheduled tasks folder or interactively. Sometimes it crashes immediately after mounting the tape, sometimes it will quite happily write data for 2 hours before crashing. The errors I get are as follows:
Faulting application ntbackup.exe, version 5.2.3790.70, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.0, fault address 0x0000744e.
Faulting application ntbackup.exe, version 5.2.3790.70, faulting module mfc42u.dll, version 6.5.3014.0, fault address 0x000010a7.
Faulting application ntbackup.exe, version 5.2.3790.70, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.0, fault address 0x00008787.
After the error ocurrs it is not possible to eject the tape nor write a free media label on it. The server must be restarted before it is possible to perform any further operations on the tape drive. I cannot figure out what is going on here. This problem has ocurred since the server was installed in August.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

just guessing but sounds like a dell thing have you called them? you have just described my new server hardware and software so i am highly interested in your situation. i see nothing in mskb so far. what is in the event viewer logs?. it does this with fresh tape, yes?

What are your backup settings? Have you turned on full logging?
What else is running, i.e. Anti-Virus, Exchange etc. Try to stop
services in a ntbackup bat file before and start them after the
      backup.

I have found a few threads on this and the solutions vary. Here
      are some samples:

“I have had backups fail after removing a Users’ account and
Mailbox. Had to purge the message store before backup would
      run successfully.”

“never tell ntbackup to overwrite existing Media”

      That last one was from:

      http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?
      board.id=pes_win2003&message.id=604

      Hope it helps,

Well, you’re not the only one having problems with SBS and ntbackup. It appears that most problems occur with backing up from multiple servers, mapped drives and anti-virus apps. The best solution I could give you is to look at a more competant backup solution like Veritas because with all of the problems I saw out there there were no solutions for the error you are getting.

      Sorry.
