First post here, and I need some advice please.
I had one DC running 2003 as the sole server in a small lan with approx 35 pc’s.
I have introduced a new server (also 2003) to be the replacement DC as the old server’s hardware is just no longer up to par.
I think I made the mistake of promoting the new DC with a new domain name (we are changing the domain name too)while the other file server was still on the network. The new DC’s IP structure is different from the old as we are implementing a new IP strategy also.
I started having problems right after this. With the old DC not demoted but unplugged from the network, I tried to rejoin my XP Pro pc’s to the newer domain. They failed on the first attempt, but let me join on the second or third try. The big issue comes now with trying to browse by UNC path to shares on the new DC. It asks for authentication, even if I am logged onto PC as administrator. It will just keep failing authentication over and over. I formatted one pc, and it joined perfectly, and could browse the paths with no problems. Once I reboot and log back on, the problems re-appear again!
I have tried various things, but it looked like to me the roles were still attached to the old server. I tried using ntdsutil.exe and seizing the roles, but no luck.
I had demoted the old server, then I decided to demote/promote the new server in an attempt to make the network pc’s adhere to the new server fully. Nothing is working out, and short of re-doing everything from scratch, I am wits end.
Anyone have any ideas??
