Problem with USB External Hard Drive

by teema195 . Updated 17 years, 7 months ago

Hey there,
I just bought a Western Digital My Passport Essentials 250GB External Hard drive 2 days ago. I connected it to a Windows XP Desktop computer, but it just kept plugging and unplugging. Eventually, it stopped unplugging, and I copied all files on my laptop hard drive to it.

When i tried to connect it to my laptop (that’s been formatted just yesterday and has a Windows Vista Home Premium OS), it keeps plugging and unplugging and in the 2 seconds it’s plugged, Windows Vista cannot locate the device driver and can’t find any update to it on the internet. The device is seen as an unidentified device. There is not even any signatures identified on the drive.

I tried to connect it to the windows XP computer afterwards, but it plugs and unplugs and i can’t see the drive in My Computer and the “Hardware installation problem. The hardware device will not work properly” error is pops up. The Drive just appears in the “Other Devices” in Device Manager with no drivers whatsoever related to it.

i tried to look for the device driver on the Western Digital website, but nothing’d there.

What can I do?? I really need that information. It’s four years worth of work! So i just can’t format. That is, even if i have a chance to do so, i still can’t.

I know it all sounds too boring and that i’m talking too much, but plz plz plz help me!!!!
I don’t know what to do!!!

P.S. it’s almost midnight in my country.
