Problem with Win98 and 1gig of RAM?

By MJA ·
I have a client that placed 4 256 memory chips in a 1.8 mhz clone pc. When he boots up the bios recognizes it but when he goes to the virtual setting in Win98 it shows a negative number. He also infor,s me that when he attemps to load some programs that he gets a memory error. The resources show only 10% free! How can that be and what may be causing the problem? Thanks!

Problem with Win98 and 1gig of RAM?

Yes indeed, it is a known bug in 98.
There seams to be different hardware configurations that can handle more memory than others.
To be on the safe side, you want no more than 511MB of ram on a 98 system.
I use 384MB myself.

There are 2 MS knowledge base articles on the problem.

I did read an article where the author ran benchmark tests with various memory combinations in W98. The best performance on the test system was with 196MB!

Hi,

Rather than wasting the memory if you find you have to drop back to 512Mb for your motherboard/Win98 to effectively use it, your client would be far better off upgrading to WinXP.

Its a much better operating system and uses the memory muchmore effectively. The machine's specs are way above what is needed and as long as there are no compatibility issues with existing software or other hardware, it would be a decision never regretted!

Cheers,
Tim.

Problem with Win98 and 1gig of RAM?

by Shanghai Sam In reply to Problem with Win98 and 1g ...

The problem that many people are unaware of is that their system simply won't support the newly purchased RAM or hard drive .

There are several limitations due to hardware restraints or operating system limitations. For instance, Windows '95, 98, and Millennium Edition only support 512 MB of RAM. Anything over 512 MB of RAM can cause instability in the operating system and/or random errors that cannot be duplicated.
This is what Microsoft an others have to say about it;
