I have a compaq notebook running Windows 2000 Pro with SP3. The problem is that it is running slower than it should be. I already defragged my HD and it is still that way.
Upon investigation, in task manager,I noticed a process called winkcew.exe hogging up a lot of CPU cycle, which I gather causes my system slowness. This file is in C:\winnt\system32.
I can’t any information anywhere on what this file is about. Any attempts to terminate the process just yields an “access denied” message.
A search in the registry revealed that it has something to do with Internet Explorer (HK_current user\software\microsoft\internet explorer\explorer bars\{bunch of numbers} and some kind of Windows service(HK local machine\system\controlset001\services
A look in the service list just revealed a service called winkcew, in which I can neither start nor stop, although it is already started.
I need to know what service this is, whether I can terminate it, and terminate it safely without affecting windows.
