Remove Pen Drive Write Protection

by pcs365_1 In reply to problem

Hi laxgate,

From your posting, I understand you are plugging in a pen-drive and instantly getting an error stating -The disk is write protected- on a Windows XP Operating System. Hope you find the below steps useful to remove the write protection:

1) Click on Start > Run. Type in regedit (This will take you to the Windows Registry)

2) Navigate to the key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\

3) Find a sub key inside that is named "StorageDevicePolicies".
a) If the key exists, follow Step 4 and Step 5.
b) If the key does not exist there then it needs to be created. Steps to create them are - Right click on "Control" key -> New -> Key. Name it "StorageDevicePolicies" without quotes. Now right click on this newly created key and then click New -> DWORD value and name it as "WriteProtect". Now follow Step 4 and Step 5

4) Double click this key to modify and give it a value 0 to disable it. (Value 1 here means 'Enable', while Value 0 means 'Disable')

5) Click OK to save and exit the Windows Registry

Reboot your computer and then plug in the pen-drive and your system should not produce any error.

Do let me know if incase of any clarifications,
