Problems with audio device

By tony ·
I have a message up in my control pael in Winxp pro saying "No audio device"

I have an Asus 7V8XMX motherboard with on board sound "via 3058 AC 97". Other useful information is "Via KM400 8235".

I do not have a soundcard installed and would appreciate some the best one to use

Can anyone help me please

Thanks

Tony

Drivers

Depending on what you plan to do with audio, the on-board AC97 based sound might be all you need.

Assuming the hardware is fine, you need to install the audio driver from Asus or VIA, and possibly enable the on-board sound in BIOS setup.

If you are looking for something with more features than the on-board sound, or plan to do recording work, you may want / need a better sound card.

For serious recording work, you need a true audio A/D converter card and not a standard sound card.

For just better performance, and more features, most of the $10 cards you can find on the web work just fine.

For a general purpose sound card capable of capturing LPs and cassettes to transfer from analog to digital, I like the cards offered by Turtle Beach.

As Chas has said you need to load the drivers

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to Problems with audio devic ...

These will be on the ASUS M'Board CD that comes with the M'Board.

Just because Windows supports some hardware doesn't mean that it automatically installs the necessary drivers for that hardware. So you need to go into the Device Management and select Other then find the Sound Card that is Onboard and right click on this and chose the Update Driver option with the ASUS CD in the CD/DVD Drive and allow the correct drivers to be installed. You'll also need to do the same thing with any other devices that have not been recognized when you loaded XP.

To get into the Device Manager Right Click on My Computer select Proprieties then Hardware, Device Manager then Other.

Note anything listed here with a yellow circle and Black mark through it hasn't been installed and needs attention so you need to load the drivers for anything shown here. Or correct any other problems that are shown in this manner.
