Problems with DNS.

By jfpelletier ·
Hi,

I seem to have problems with my principal DNS, and it cause problems with my users. Each time a user that are on windows XP try to login it takes forever if don't had the DNS manually. But the principal DNS can't go to internet, due to the fact that i can't see the root. Anyways, my question is do i have to reinstall the DNS wich means reinstall the wholes active Directory, or is there a way that i can save my active directory but with solving thoses problems.

On the client machine, the GPO are not apply. In the event viewer i receive the error userenv. If anybody can help me, it will be appreciated.

You must configure DNS in XP to point to ip address of Domain Controller. Then you must configure DNS forwarding on your DNS server, so to forward any unresolved DNS request to a public DNS. In this way you'll be able to login to 2K domain, because your DNS is the server, and the server itself will forward any "outgoing" DNS request from XP client.
Hope this helps.

if you can enable your dns server to go on the net it will fix your problem by deleting the "." directory under forward lookup zones, the go to the command prompt and type "net stop dns" "net stop netlogon" "net start netlogon" "net start dns" this is what i had to do then set the pri dns on the xp boxes to my server and have the server forward to the root servers and it works great.
