Problems with "My Computer" command?

By jsmart ·
When I click on my "my Computer" command, either it doesn't open at all, or the window opens with just the background appearing -but with no icons appearing at all. (i.e., the icons for my various drives and document files, like "c:\, a my documents," etc.)
I have used "system restore" (which sucessfully restored to a previous date only twice out of about 18 tries -what the heck is up with this frustrating utility, also?)to go back to a time when the "My Computer" command was working, but then, after using the computer for a few days the same problem develops again!
I forgot to mention that once the incomplete "My Computer" window appears, I cannot get it to go away and it hangs up my whole system forcing me to do a "push button" reboot. Any ideas?

Is this a stand alone computer or is it on a network? Network clients can do similar things.

However it really sounds like a virus or trojan. Are you current on your Virus DAT updates? If you are run a full scan with System restore Turned OFF.
If it is not up to date the scan it with something like Stinger:

or a Good DOS scanner like NOD32
http://www.nod32.com/download/trial.htm
If you need a free virus scanner you can get them at:
http://www.free-av.com/
or:
AVG v 7.0 at:
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.php

When you are all clean, get the free ZoneAlarm 4.5 at:
http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1043_zl/zapSetup_45_594_000.exe
This is a slighly older version, but the is a problem with verersin 5.0.
Or even better buy the Pro version.

Have you got a CD in the drive. When you get a faulty disk which the computer can not read, it will hang. Remove all removable media and try again.

bad floppy disk drive or media as well as cd-rom drive and media can cause this hang. Also mapped drives that cannot reconnect can sometimes cause a delay in my computer from appearing. Disconnect all network drives, remove all media and try again. Then try disconnecting cd-rom and floppy drives and try again. Otherwise, beats me!
