I have a 10/100 Ethernet switch which is having problems. Ping times from workstations vary a huge amount – 1ms to 400+ms to even timing out.
There is not much traffic on the segment but sometimes we can’t pull data at all. The server can ping the switch with similar results and shows at times many packets are being dropped.
What causes a switch to drop packets like this? Why would it change suddenly? Hardware failure?
If the switch is failing, can it be repaired?
