Procedure for upgrading W2K NETWORK TO SMB2003 BASED NETWORK

By imvictorius ·
Upgrade windows 2000 network to Small business server 2003 network:

Has anyone done this? How did you go about it; The SMB Server came pre-installed on a new HP server so we are not upgrading the W2k server (which is the only server serving as DC, DNS, file server etc) on the network. During setup the SMB2003 server is trying to take charge so we had to install it in a different (new) domain.

Do you know of a better way to bring the SMB2003 server up on the same network/Domain to facilitate file migrations before retiring the old w2k server.

PLEASE NOTE; I have seen several articles dealing with upgrading w2k server to SMB 2003 Server on Microsoft website. But I am interested in procedure in upgrading W2K NETWORK TO SMB2003 BASED NETWORK

Why didn't you just let it take charge? That's what you wanted it to do anyway. Make the win2k3 server a domain controller for the same domain as the win2k server. the two servers will share the DC role and replicate to each other. once the domain is replicated onto the win2k3 machine, you can pull the old server and change the domain to a pure 2003 domain.
