Looking for good software that would allow an administrator to inventory installed software on client and server machines. Was given a job to find out how many copies of popular software packages are installed, and what the those packages are. It was easy to keep track when there were only 10 pc and 2 servers, but now we have grown to 50 pcs and 12 servers. The job is now getting out of control. I am aware of Microsoft's SMS, but thought that package to be too large and expensive for a small buisness to use. Any help would be appreciated.
I'd agree on SMS - it would do the job but its a bit overkill. A competitor with a much shorter learning curve would be Intel LANDesk Management Suit - also has good inventory. Or the desktop suite of Veritas (ex-Seagate) - next to WinInstall for the distrib they also have a reasonable modular inventory tool, afar under the overall name of DMS.
I know this has already been answered but I thought I'd add a little info anyway. :)
There are several packages on the market to help with Software auditing. Some are high cost and others are fairly reasonable. I have used GASP and Tally Systems TS Census. Both of these products carry a good sized price tag. Contact a rep for details. www.gasp.com or www.tallysystems.com
Tally has a great solution for a company your size. Their WebCensus product is extremely reasonable at a very low cost per seat for a 30 day subscription. The audit is done through the web browser. WebCensus saves an html document to the local hard drive with HW and SW inventory for the system. You can collect those documents to use or for an additional charge Tally will send you a .CSV file for import into a spreadsheet or database. Hope this helps anyone stumbling on this question.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
