Programs disappear from All Programs in XP

By gpalo ·
Something caused all the programs under the Program Files folder, which used to show up under Start->All Programs to disappear. The program folders and files are in the directory, but I can't see them in the pull down. This happens to all users on my home pc, with Windows XP Pro. Any suggestions to make them appear?

Virus, Worm, Trojan

Could be any number of issues.

What virus scans have you run?

Yes I do.

I run Avast all the time and keep it up to date. I wonder if it has something to do with protections or visibility of the directories. When I install new programs, they appear in the list, but the old ones, although they are there, do not. If a virus was zapping it, you'd think the new programs would disappear too.

Try a restore

I had this problem on a clients machine the other day it also caused no programs to show up in the add and remove programs list in the control panel, it was very odd.

The only way I found around it was to do a system restore to a previous date and that fixed the problem.

I tried a restore - and it worked!

Thanks for that tip. I restored to a couple of months ago and everything came back. I had to reinstall a couple of items, but it's as good as new. All the programs appear in the list now, and also some desktop shortcut icons that were lost are now back. My anti-spam program had also gone away but it is back too. I'd sure like to know what happened, but at least I am healthy again. Thanks again.

No Probs . . .

I can't actually tell you why it happened, as it happened to one of my customers and a restore was the only way around the problem, if you ever find out then let me know as well.

I got twice of this problem and finally found due to using some registry cleaner program ..

First time I seek solution for a long time from web, and I put my solution to some forum. Second time (this time) I found my solution, and hope posting more to let people solve easier if found this problem again.

The Problem:-
When you Click Start button and navigate to "All Programs",you find the menu is missing.

Now navigate to the following keys:-
HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell FoldersSet Start Menu value to "%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu"

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders Set Common Start Menu value to "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu"

Close the registry editor and restart the machine.

Would you provide a print screen of the registry changes you made to correct the start, all programs and nothing happens issue?

Possible solution

I just had a similar issue. No all programs disappeared but most did. In my case, I had accidentally flagged all files and directories under Documents and Setting as hidden in the Documents and Settings Properties box. From then on, anything in those directories were 'hidden'. I unchecked the hidden box in the Documents and Settings Properties box and appied to all subdirectories and now all my programs show again in the All Programs listing.
