Programs won't launch on Windows ME

By PC Nut ·
Programs won't launch, not even Internet Explorer. The only thing that works is AOL Instant Messenger. NAV is up-to-date with no viruses detected.

Any error messages? If so, what are they?

See if System File Checker will run. Start -> Run -> sfc

Try repairing IE installation (if IE6) from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. If IE 5.5 or earlier, upgrade to IE6.

If no luck, post back and we'll give you a link to remove/reinstall IE.

Also might want to give FireFox a look. At mozilla.org.

No error messages. Tried repairing from Add/Remove Programs - nothing changed.

Internet Explorer is the only program that won't load now. After trying different settings in Internet Security to no avail, I finally disabled IS entirely and IE still won't load.

Is it after a new install or has the computer been running all along and now its messed up? If it is a new install sometimes you have to navigate into the Internet explorer folder and delete the sign up folder, then IE will work.

I take it you previously had AOL? when you say IE wont launch do you get a white page or it wont even attempt to open? If you cannot display a web page but can ping a site, then you are connected. The problem is the TCP/IP protocol that has an AOL appended onto it. If you go into your networking folder and view the TCP/IP protocol it will look like this TCP/IP/AOL. The additional AOL is put there by AOL to frustrate you to avoid switching to another provider, its insurance to guarantee repeat business saying to yourself "it always worked on AOL". Microsoft was so urked at this that they made XP uncorruptable from them, by locking the protocol down. If you get another browser installed like netscape or mozilla and it happens again then you know its protocol corruption to either uninstall the protocol or the winsock file. Either way you need the operating disk not a restore disk.

Not a new install - has been running fine until about a week ago. Never had AOL, but use AOL Instant Messenger. ISP is Roadrunner for about 3 years. TCP/IP looks fine.

Thought this may have been the answer, but couldn't get AAW - SE Personal to install, even after disabling Internet Security & Antivirus. Internet Security is running, however, but it didn't pick up anything.

Most probably a hijacker. Try "HijackThis".

You may have a virus that changes the .EXE extension to run something else other than programs. Try using System Restore to revert to an earlier time.

Fix EXE associations:
