I have recently got a job {THANK GOD} and my network is in total disarray. Its an IT nightmare but its a job. I have toe task of upgrading security first within the network. MY question is there a tool of some kind that will list all the shared folders and the users they have assigned in stead of having to go through each folder and getting the information that way. Please help

You can go to http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pstools.shtml

and download their PsTools.

With PsInfo, you can get the shares that each machine on your network is mapped to:

At a CMD prompt, you'd run:

psinfo \\computername -d

it will display all the mapped shares they have running on that computer.

Other than the above, there's no easy way (aside from visiting each computer) to get all the infomation that you are looking for.

congrats! i use LanBrowser from firestorm software. www.firestormsoftware.com
one of its options allows you to scan the network for all devices. then right click each device and click on shares. it'll list all the shares, the permissions and where its mapped to. it's a great piece of software. also, you might want to invest in TrackIt 5.0 after you're settled down.

good luck.

p.s. you can do cacls /? on the command prompt. it's free, but a bit more tedious. check out tech republic thread 84219
