A protocol is simpley the language computers use to talk to each other. TCP/IP was developed for the internet. IPX/SPX was developed by Novell for their netware networks. SNA/SDLC is a proprietary protocol developed by IBM. BISYNCH is another IBM protocol. NDL was developed by what used to be Burroughs (now Unisys) for remote communications. their internal protocol was primarily TDC. (Two wire direct communications.) For more info than you probably want go to www.yahoo.com and search forprotocol.
