Proxy 2.0 - Time spent on Internet

By joeblow1524 ·
Is there a way I can monitor the amount of time a user spends on the Internet? I am using Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 and I am the network administrator. I can't seem to find a tool for this. Please respond.

Not that I am aware of. There might be a 3rd party software that allows you to do this but under Proxy the only thing I can think of is to enable logging and then go through the logs and note the user and times they are going to internet sites.
Good Luck

We use surfCONTROL for Proxy to monitor and control web access. Previously we used the logging in the Proxy settings and pulled what we could from the logs with Crystal Reports. You could probably create a custom mdb to import the logs into yourself...

I use webtrends products, www.webtrends.com

there is a eval version available so you can at least see what has happened, and check for the next 30 days for free.

My personal feeling is that there is not any accurate way to track this information. The reason I say accurately is based on the static nature of HTTP traffic. Since the session is open, content delivered, session closed, your time will be skewed. Couple that with Proxy's caching, and you may never hit any further than the proxy. I would be inclined to look at the browser level for help, and combine with a custom VB app that does nothing more than time and log the actual time IE or Netscapeis open. You should be able to pull from the Task Manager (iexplore.exe thread execution time). This should give you a more accurate picture.
