I am trying to avoid using a hub for a small peer-to-peer network with 4 PCs running Win98SE using BNC coax cable. One computer has a second network card that is now connected to a cable modem.
Using the IP for the NON-cable modem network card #1 as a proxy, I am able to access the Internet on all four computers using IE 5.5.
On the primary machine I am able to access email with both Outlook and AOL using TCP/IP as the connection.
I can even access web-based mail (AOL-netmail and Hotmail.com) from the satellite computers once I am on the internet. (Each of the machines still has a modem and is capable of dial-up email connections.) But I CANNOT get email to run with TCP/IP from the satellite computers through the primary computer to the internet, nor can I get Outlook to work except through the dial-up modem.
My understanding is that I need to “define the ports” that the email is going through on the cable proxy computer for send/receive email. I do NOT want to switch to ethernet and get a hub. Surely if I am able to get internet access through the primary network card as a proxy, I should be able to configure the satellite computers to send and receive email.
Any suggestions?
